MEN IN SKIRTS / DRESSES - MEN'S FASHION WEEK - SPRING SUMMER 2012

Yes ! Men in Skirts and Dresses ! That's what it's gonna be on the streets in coming years. A trend which is slowly building up strong from past a few year. John Galliano, Comme Des Garcons, Etro , Marc Jacobs have done it in the past and in this fashion week also (Men's SS2012) it was repeated by greats like Yohji Yamamoto , Rick Owens and few else. The androgynous look is getting stronger and is being accepted by the people as fashion steps in the 3G era. However, if you think that these looks are just meant to be on catwalk then you need to be updated ! Ask  Scott Schuman, the great cool hunter who has captured quite a few men in skirt through his lenses for his blog.
I would really like to know what women has to say about this ?

RICK OWENS

Rick Owens' signature style is Gothicism, Vampirish which is often cut into a structured silhouette and it sometimes dealt with volumes but this time it was little different as his men came in long dresses with  geometrical prints / patterns, short dresses beneath the blazer were worn over straight skirts but the coolest look was the one in which  short sleeveless top was worn and wrapped over a long dress in some short of monkish way ! Very interesting.

YOHJI YAMAMOTO

Yohji Yamamoto, known for his ground breaking designs which usually takes the route of super fine and awesome fabrics cut into a silhouette that has a lot of volume, relaxed, baggie and not to forget that all of these comes mostly in "Black" - his signature style ! This time, he sent his men in skirts, loose fluid short-pants which came in various colors, prints and stripes. Though the collection  was very Asian  inspired but it spoke of  a character which doesn't care about caste, creed and age but only fashion !

  5. My apologies but I am fond looking at men wearing skirts. I don't think the collection is appealing to the public. This is just my point of view. I don't know what others will say to this.

  6. It is NOT about men wearing “feminine” skirts, rather it IS about men RECLAIMING masculine skirted garments, which have always been a men’s garment, worn by men throughout every era of history and still today in many countries. Whether it is the traditional kilt or modern kilt or modern day men’s skirts, MEN are RECLAIMING this garment that was always theirs!

  8. You've given me inspiration. I have bought fabric and a sewing machine, and looks similar to the first designer's will be hitting the street soon - worn on my back. With a bit of tweaking, those looks can be classy, elegant, even glamorous, without presenting oneself as female.

    2. It's looking fabulous. The attention I get is phenominal, because I stick to simple styles in one colour, and use understated luxury fabrics like pashmina and linen.

    3. Hi. Glad to know that it has come out well and you are getting all the attention !

I am sure since it's linen and pashmina so the fit must be very nice and comfortable too. Why don't you send me a picture of yours so that we all can appreciate your work.

      Cheers

  9. Yes, men reclaim the right to wear their wardrobe which was it for more than 10,000 years. I do it since 5 years since I learned that it is the best to do when wearing my support stockings. Wherever I am I get very nice comments, talks and positive ideas for better mix and match

  10. Love the article. Have been a skirt wearer for some time (note, not a cross-dresser although I have nothing against peoples choices). Have bought pleated black skirts as they're similar to kilts but, not kilts nor are they anywhere as expensive. Would love to see the wearing of skirts of some description common place for men.

  11. I love wearing my skirts and I have to say if the pictures above are what the designers are trying to sell to men than its easy to see why the 'men in skirts movement' has not taken off. If anyone is worried about not looking like a manly man there are plenty of womens skirts out there that a man can wear and still look like a man.I wear whatever suits me at the moment. I'm balding and have a beard and I'm a manly man for sure but I like skirts and see no reason for not wearing them.
Designers don't have to'reinvent the wheel' when it comes to skirts made for men, some of the existing womens skirts are OK as is and some might need a little tweaking but it has to have appeal to be marketable. The pictures above are good for the 'cutting edge and shock' value but for winning the 'hearts and minds' of men they fail. K.I.S.S.

  12. Some of these looks work; others are dreadful. Overall the male skirted look is going to get more popular, as gradually more men follow the lead of designers and realise it is perfectly OK for a man to wear a skirt. They are usually more comfortable than trousers, especially jeans!

It takes balls for a man to wear a skirt! So go for it!

  13. I would love to see more fashions showing men in skirts. Having said that, I'm afraid that what I've seen here resembles walking rag heaps. The designers are trying to be so avant garde that they're losing the fact that sometimes simple is better.
I'm also not thrilled with their model choices. They seem to be in love with the usual stick figures we see prevalent in female fashion sows. They really should try to use male models who actually look like men and not emaciated waifs.

  14. If you were forced to wear womens clothing would it be a sin?

  17. Mini skirts have been around for years, and they never quite seem to go out of style. If you are looking to catch a man's eye-including the eye of your husband or boyfriend, consider donning a leather mini skirt and watch their mouths drop.

  18. These skirts are butt ugly. There are many womens skirts out there that men can wear. Mens designers are missing it on this one. I'm 66 and I have many womens skirts that are OK for men to wear and I'm planning on ordering a kilt this spring. This movement of men wearing skirts will never get off the ground as long as the designers are cranking out ugly skirts like these.

  26. The above skirts are ugly . So ugly that any gender will refuse to wear them in Public. Its bulky, clumpsy, not appealling ,dull color and dangerous to wear in an antique / glassware store. These dress and skirt will discourage all men to wear skirt and dress for sure.

  28. Sure, men should reclaim their right to wear skirts, again. In my opinion, men looking much better in a skirt than shorts, and a lot of men even much better than in long pants. There are some men's style skirts (long and short) on market, they looking just great. Men, go and try it. Mara
